Shadow of the Past©Brian Froud

A Shadow of the Past

Haunting spirit, damaged rose
Enigmatic thorns
The misery and comfort
My memory adorns

Wilted decades, seasons past
Oh distant, ghostly muse
Why linger on my canvas
My colors to confuse?

Beauty, uninvited guest
That walks into my frame
Frequently I seem to err
In calling out your name

At any given moment
With no intention planned
Your presence washes over me
As if you had command

An energy, mysterious
What boundaries you transgress?
Did you just move your queen
In this cosmic game of chess?

Shadow of the past so near
I feel you deep inside
Do you live in my subconscious
Or, in my heart reside?

Maybe we could come to terms
Each journey half the way
Bathe in healing waters
That flow through lands of Fae

Is it myself I need to meet
Beneath the faeries' glow?
Am I the one that's holding on
To what I can’t let go?

I do not know the answer
Nor do I have resolve
The poet's trail is all I know
That may help me solve

The challenge of creating
A love that sets me free
Where past can meet the present
And faeries' blessings be

Oracle, please guide me
Through the mist and haze
Sound out this apparition
To find out why it plays
