Road Slayer: A Runner's Poem
I’m not a Viking yet, I think
The Norse have come and gone
But I may find a distant link
Like a king does to a pawn
The road I tread is hot and hard
A journey that I seek
A warrior’s song told by the bard
That ebbs before the peak
My weapons are not axe, nor sword
It’s rubber that I need
I give no oath to King, nor Lord
I ride on shoes, not steed
For maidens, Odin, and mighty Thor
I strike the pavement true
For peace, and strength and modern Lore
I die, and then renew
I shed my blood on blackroad-tar
I sweat for Freya’s Love
I slay for pain and trudge so far
For, Valhalla is above!!
If I may suffer from mile to mile
And finish brave and strong
My face will beam triumphant smile
And you may sing my song
If this, to you, is frivolous fare
And quite beyond the pale
Then sit with me you may not dare
Nor join me in my ale!
