The Fairy and the Vampire: A Tale of New York
***
Again, we sense the winged-ones
In this day and age
The fairy and the vampire
Populate our stage
There is a tale that you should know
If blood is on your dish
Trade your fangs for gossamer
And make a fairy wish
As you have your evening tea
On a dark and dreary hour
Take caution as you marvel
Upon fairies’ stunning power
***
Upon a frigid, winter night
In icy forest black
A fairy briefly lost her way
She ticked, but missed her tack
She felt a strange, unwelcome dread
A shiver down her spine
An unusual disturbance
Amongst the forest pine
A moonbeam darted through the trees
A cold and piercing glow
Perching close, upon a branch
A bird she did not know
The fairy sprite became perplexed
A mania ensued
She quickly flitted back and forth
Her senses were unglued
“You’re not an owl, of that I’m sure
Nor hawk that soars the sky
You have frightful wings and talons
So I’m certain that you fly”
Your intuition is correct
Delightful woodland sprite
Do not fear my cold attire
And sit with me this night
I will tell you of my kind
The periods I’ve seen
Generations, wars, and histories
Life, death, and the between
I do not live, nor am I dead
I thrive on those still warm
I’m vampire, nosferatu
I promise you no harm
Now I have you hypnotized
I command your aid
I’ve fed tonight so little
In these realms I’ve never stayed
Be my friend, my little one
I need your sight and sense
Guard my lair, protect my nest
You’ll earn your recompense
When I’m on the hunting grounds
You’ll help me clean my spill
When I’m asleep, you’ll speak for me
Prepare for my next kill
If I run like hungry wolf
Or fly like thirsty bat
You’ll know me by these fiery eyes
That glow like jungle cat
Hear me now, o woodland fae
Journey to the edge
You will live to serve me
Give me your oath and pledge
“I will do as you command
My queen of living dark
I’m intrigued by what you see
Your wisdom I will hark”
“The living force within these woods
Is plentiful, indeed
Breathing creatures, great and small
Will sate your every need”
“I’ll show you where the rabbits hide
Or would you have a fawn?
Perhaps you’ll dine on feathered life
And drink until the dawn”
“The human-kind are numerous
Outside the misty glen
I visit on occasion
To play with horse and hen”
You'll do well, my little wings
I’m pleased by your resolve
I’ll need your firm diplomacy
Some problems you might solve
If you betray me to your kind
I will break my bond
Then squash you like a butterfly
And smear you on a frond
“O, mistress from your shallow grave
I hear you and obey
I’ll protect your forest haunt
Under moon, and light of day”
“Observe the magic of my sword
Forged by fairy art
I dedicate my sturdy blade
I’m proud to do my part”
Then FASTER than the vampire
And how the fairy flies
The fairy struck the horrid maid
Right between the eyes
With impressive titan strength
The precision of a snake
She sliced the creature perfectly
Her sword became a stake
Into the cold and ugly heart
She stilled the wicked beat
And hung the carcass from a tree
Her mission was complete
She ripped the wings to tattered shreds
And lit a raging fire
Said a prayer to the Moon
"This is your funeral pyre"
"I'm glad to be of service
And put you to your rest
You presume to take control
And put me to the test?"
"You’re little match for fairy kind
You think that we don’t see?
WE protect what’s living good
With calm ferocity”
“You monstrous, sucking viper
Unholy, wretched ghoul
It’s never wise to condescend
Or play me like a fool”
“I’m the guardian of the night
That bathes the fairy realm
I will do the slaying here
I stand upon the helm”
In the wicked creature’s blood
She painted fairy scrawl
That glowed in brilliant radiance
For vampires, one and all
“Your end will be a bitter one!”
A warning bold and clear
“Don’t come near our animals
THERE IS NO FEEDING HERE!!”
Part II…
Now you understand the plight
Of those with deathly ties
That challenge faerie guardians
And meet a sad demise
Yet, I must now inform you
This tale is not at end
A greater power still exists
Whom fairies did offend
Perhaps you should refresh your cup
And sit by candle light
For Egmont is awakened
And fearful is his might
***
Just a moment to return
To darker times gone by
When misery was company
And Death ruled land and sky
From a noble lineage
In old Germanic lands
Was Egmont re-created
By strange demonic hands
The prince lost all his human breath
Fine tastes for ale and wine
He now prefers to feed on blood
From flesh like yours and mine
Here we sit in modern times
In Eighteen-thirty-five
Egmont is a vampire king
And rules a wiked hive
On Manhattan’s Bowry Way
In the village near the piers
Egmont holds his properties
In this New World for years
He keeps a fine establishment
Where he can keep an eye
On his unholy children
And treasures piled high
His family feeds judiciously
And leaves the locals free
But in the nearby colonies
They sink their fangs with glee
One day a thankless daughter
(In Amsterdam was made)
Fed on a local merchant
Who claimed he was not paid
Jelbrich disobeyed the law
Was exiled from the lair
To find her way in forest black
Far from the harbor’s flair
Upon a quiet, foggy eve
As Egmont watched supplies
A searing pain attacked him
Between his ancient eyes
Immediately he knew the cause
His daughter met ill-luck
Was banishment too merciless?
His Jelbrich had been struck!

In an instant moment
Too fast for eyes to see
The vampire king transported
To the place of misery
With the radar of a bat
That led him northward bound
He found his daughter's remnants
On the killing ground
With centuries of knowledge
He scarcely could believe
A vampire so challenged
Undone beyond reprieve
With a most horrific howl
A torrent of sad tears
Egmont felt a heightened rage
That channeled his worst fears
While he bowed his head in pause
To try to make some sense
A troop of fairy warriors
Emerged at full defense
An array of winged-soldiers
Emblazed with swords and shield
A stunning, strong formation
That promised not to yield
I've heard a little of your kind
But never was quite sure
That the tales were accurate
Your presence so obscure
You answer me with silence
I'm quite prepared for pranks
When suddenly the Queen emerged
Straight through the fairy ranks
"You should have never come here
You are not supposed to see
So I will offer you a gift
You're death will set you free"
I know not from whence you came
Oh ghostly, winged-sprite
You slaughtered my dear daughter
So, now prepare to fight!
She was young and foolish
Had not my ancient skill
You erred in setting her a trap
And making her your kill
The king and queen rose to the sky
In an energetic field
Their eyes were locked for hours
Their fates remained unsealed
What thoughts were transferred in between
No mortal could surmise
The energy and power
Are not for human eyes
The fairy guards stood ready
To come to the queen’s aid
If she gave a clear command
So patiently they stayed
The vampire felt weakened
And started to descend
Graciously, said fairy queen
"Prepare your final end"
I'm not sure you understand
This game you will not win
Release this unknown hold on me
I never will give in
A power stalemate then ensued
The queen was most perplexed
How could this creature not of Fae
Have her power vexed?
In a flash the king was gone
This brought the queen concern
"I feel that in these modern times
Some different fires burn"
With lightning speed, a vampire male
Descended from the trees
Who tailed his king most stealthfully
With loyal expertise
Egmont had been rescued
By Geert, his eldest son
Who acted quite decidedly
Like a bullet from a gun
