The Mushroom and the Mole
"Good morrow, dapper little gent
You're busy, so I see
I laud you for your energy
And steadfast industry
I don't mean to burden you
Or, your project thwart
I have a small dilemma
A mushroom's life is short.
You are digging awfully close
In this muddy soil
To my very tender stem
From this I must recoil.
Might I suggest a different plan
To suit the both of us
Could you work by yonder tree
He won't mind the fuss.
I would like to stay around
Perhaps a week, or two
The temperature is cool and moist
I'm sure I'll see it through.
I so enjoy these sacred woods
I'd like to be your friend
So, could you start your tunnel
From the other end.
We'll tell each other stories
And magic forest lore
You can keep me company
While I shed my spore.
I'm sure we'll join a fairy ring
If you wait awhile
You'll dance around so merrily
I'll wave my arms and smile.
That is what I have to say
I hope you will agree
I think you see the wisdom
In letting me go free."
The little shoveler stopped his work
Except to fill the hole
For, caring and compassionate
Was this special mole.
"Pardon me, o gentle sir
Of course, you are quite right
I will cease my work today
To rest for a fortnight.
I have holes and passage ways
Beneath the forest land
For the sake of friendship
I give heed to your demand."
The mushroom and the mole
Took the least resistant road
For compromise takes courage
Which they duly showed.
